Entry from: Pisgah Forest, United States Entry Title: "LINVILLE GORGE & COVERED BRIDGE" Entry: "LINVILLE GORGE WILDERNESS AREA Linville Gorge Wilderness Area encompasses one of the largest and most remote river gorges in the eastern US. The gorge descends 2000 feet in 17 miles. Highest part of the gorge is 4120 feet and lowest point is 1250 feet. On average the gorge is more than 2 miles wide and 1750 feet deep surrounded by miles of jagged cliffs several hundred vertical feet high. This is a mecca for rock climbers. Since logging here is difficult there are remote areas with virgin timber. The gorge is named after explorer William Linville and his son John who were killed in the gorge by Cherokees in 1766. The Cherokee refer to the river as Eeseeoh or "River of Many Cliffs". Because the gorge was designated a Wilderness Area , there is very little trail maintenance or marking. It is notorious for getting people lost. Dozens of experienced hikers have been lost in here and backcountry skills are a must. Given all this information, we headed up to Linville Gorge to view the Linville Falls. We parked in the designated parking area (N35 56' 59", W81 51', 1".
